오토두스(Otodus obliquus)는 현생 악상어의 원시형으로 신생대 팔레오세~에오세(about 60 to 37.5 million years ago)살았다. Otodus는 아프리카, 유럽, 북미, 아시아 등 전세계에서 발견되는 종으로 우리나라 신생대(마이오세/Miocene) 지층인 포항에서도 그들의 후손이 발견되고 있다.

이 상어의 이빨은 모로코의Atlas Mountains산맥의11,000 feet에서 주로 발견되고 있다.

악상어목 악상어과에 속하며 크기는 최대 전체 몸길이 900cm 정도이고 색은 등쪽 청회색, 배쪽 흰색으로 대륙붕 주변에서 서식했던 종으로 알려져 있다. 분포지역은 북부 및 남부 대서양, 남부 태평양, 남부 인도양 등의 온대 또는 아한대 해역에 분포한다. 주로 대륙붕 주변에서 생활하나 표층에서부터 370m 수심까지 이동한다. 갓 태어났을 때의 전체 몸길이가 70∼80cm에 달하며, 9m 정도까지 자라며, 최대 12m까지 자라기도 한다. 암컷의 경우 전체 몸길이 152cm가 되면 성적으로 성숙된다. 먹이는 주로 어류를 먹는다. 이빨의 크기는 3~13cm 까지 다양한 종들이 있다.

This shark is known from the fossil teeth and fossilized vertebral centra. Like other elasmobranchs, the skeleton of Otodus was composed of cartilage and not bone, resulting in relatively few preserved skeletal structures appearing within the fossil record. The teeth of this shark are large with triangular crown, smooth cutting edges, and visible cusps on the roots. Some Otodus teeth also show signs of evolving serrations.
