히이라코돈(hyracodon) 포유동물로 기제류 속하므로 홀수의 발가락을 가지는 동물이다. 신생대 초기의 코뿔소로 크기는 대략 150cm, 높이는 75cm 정도이지만 크기에비헤서 머리부분이 매우큰 기형(?)을 하고 있다. 현재는 멸종되었지만 매우 흥미로운 신생대 초기의 포유동물이다.

Hyracodonts
Hyracodon (running rhinoceros) was a small, hornless rhinoceros about the size of a pony. It had long, slender limbs and feet which enabled it to run quickly, and it looked very different from modern rhinoceroses. Hyracodon was the first genus of rhinoceros to be discovered in North America, and European scientists were initially skeptical, but Hyracodon's teeth possess distinct pi-shaped crests only found on the teeth of rhinoceroses and their relatives. It turned out that rhinoceroses evolved in North America, from tapir-like animals more than 50 million years ago. Today only five species of rhinoceros exist, and four are classed as threatened or endangered.
