약3억2천만년전인 석탄기의 태형동물화석인 아르키메데스는 미국 인디에나주의 크라우포드에서 발견되었습니다. 이 이끼동물화석은 멸종되었지만 아직도 매우 많은 이끼동물이 해양에서 살아가고 있다. 이끼동물 좀더 유식하게 태형동물(苔形動物, Bryozoa) 태선동물(苔癬動物= 태형동물문의 동물을 통틀어 이르는 말의 북한말)은 무척추동물로 외항동물(外肛動物), 태충류, 이끼벌레류(moss animal)라고도 한다.

이끼처럼 보이는데 개충이 모여 군체를 형성하며 바다와 민물에 살고 전세계적으로 약 4,000종이 밝혀져 있다. 민물에 사는 피후강(Phylactolaemata)과 모두 바다에 사는 협후강(Stenolaemata), 그리고 대부분이 바다에 사는 나후강(Gymnolaemata)의 3강으로 나뉘며, 나후강의 순구목(Cheilostomata)은 약 600속을 포함하는 가장 진화한 태형동물 무리이다.
